    About Us

Habits for a Better World is a global nonprofit using the power of research, design, and storytelling to tackle humanity’s most pressing challenges—climate change, food insecurity, health crises, biodiversity loss, and ethical tech use. With a worldwide network of volunteers across disciplines and a documentary film in production, we’re turning insight into action.

    Why This Role Matters

We’re building not just a community, but a platform for sustainable, science-backed behavior change—and AI is central to that effort. As our volunteer Front-End Full-Stack Developer, you’ll play a leading role in designing and deploying the user interface for a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) system to empower our teams and the public with trustworthy, contextualized responses drawn from our growing knowledge base.

Your work will enable people around the world to access relevant, validated insights on urgent global issues—via a conversational interface rooted in real research and data.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Build and maintain the user interface for a RAG-based AI assistant that integrates our organization’s internal knowledge base, research, and storytelling assets

    • Collaborate with our content, UX, and development teams to shape a user-facing experience (via website, chatbot, or API)

    • Document workflows and mentor team members on system maintenance and evolution

    • Collaborate closely with the executive project manager and digital platform leads to align the system with broader organizational goals

    • Regularly demonstrate progress to co-founders and senior advisors, incorporating feedback and shaping future functionality

    Skills & Experience

    • Strong proficiency in front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript/TypeScript, React or similar frameworks).

    • Experience with full-stack development (Node.js, Python, or similar for API integration).

    • Familiarity with AI/ML web app integration, particularly chatbot or RAG-based systems, is a plus.

    • Knowledge of RESTful APIs, authentication methods (OAuth/JWT), and cloud deployment (AWS, GCP, or similar).

    • Experience with responsive design, accessibility standards (WCAG), and cross-browser compatibility.

    • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.

    What You’ll Gain

    • A defining technical role in a global mission-driven initiative

    • Visibility through our platforms (we actively credit and promote volunteer contributions)

    • Collaboration with top-tier professionals in UX, research, media, and AI

    • The chance to co-develop a tool that genuinely helps people understand and change the world

    • A values-aligned team that takes both impact and ethics seriously
